For my whole life I have drawn maps of imaginary cities. In 1980 I began the Map Project when living in New York City. I developed a map of a fictional city set in the present and I then projected backwards to the city's beginnings. I drew 5 more maps that intersected the city at various stages in its development. These maps were large, 30 by 16 feet (my working table was a 30 hollow core door and proved a good match for the rolls of paper manufactured at 30). The final map in the series of 6 was completed in 1987.
Because the original maps were drawn on white butcher paper I wanted to render the maps in a more durable medium. In 1988 I presented the first map along with other objects in an exhibition in Denver at the Spark Co-operative Gallery.
