Teaching Gallery

Soon after moving to Colorado I was introduced to the artist in residency program which placed artists in the public schools. The emphasis has been primarily on teaching studio art where traditional art classes had been eliminated. Depending on the needs of the school sometimes the art making was dovetailed into larger curriculum goals.

There is a compression of decision making that artists experience, where they continually assess their work, make changes, and immediately see the results of those decisions. That is a very precious experience. To be able to provide students with the opportunity to have that experience is a very vital aspect of education. I began to see teaching art not solely as an endeavor designed to improve the students’ “draftsmanship”. I began to see it as a way to build (or strengthen) the intellectual foundation for the student (citizen) who serves as a member of a democracy.
